James M. Brauer, MD
Dr. Brauer is an Oregon native, growing up on a small ranch near Florence on the coast, where his family raised Hereford beef cattle. He attended the University of Oregon, graduating with honors in 1980 with a degree in Biology. He completed medical school at OHSU in Portland, graduating cum laude in 1984. After completing his family medicine residency in Martinez, California, Dr. Brauer and his wife Jan moved to Hood River in 1987.
Dr. Brauer deeply values the relationships that he has developed with his patients over the years . . . he considers it a great privilege to provide medical care for so many wonderful people here in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge! As a family doctor, his goal is to provide excellent preventive care to all of his patients, and to help them stay as healthy and whole as possible throughout their lifespan.
Dr. Brauer and his wife Jan have traveled thoughout the world on many occasions, providing short-term medical assistance at various locations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Dr. B. loves to play basketball, windsurf, and enjoys on-line video gaming with his family and friends.
Charles N. Buser, MD
Nic Buser loves life. He knows health is the foundation to getting the most enjoyment out of life. He wants to help keep you working hard, playing hard, and getting the most out of your life. He views himself as a health consultant harnessing the most current treatment guidelines along with your health goals to achieve a unique treatment plan for you. He provides care at all stages of life including pregnancy and newborns. The best part of his job is the relationships with his patients.
Nic was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. He graduated from Cal Berkeley with a degree in Chemistry and then attended medical school in Portland at Oregon Health & Sciences University. He completed his residency at Providence Milwaukie Family Medicine. Nic and his family moved to Hood River in 2014.
When he is not in the clinic or in the hospital, he is most likely enjoying time with his family: Wife - Heather, nephew - Preston, daughter – Eleanor, son – Charlie, and dog - June. His guilty pleasure in life is tinkering on old cars and trucks.
Robert J. Fiske, PA-C
Bob is originally from the Pacific Northwest. Beginning his medical career in 1979 as a hospital lab tech after graduating from the University of Washington. This gave him a strong base to move into the practice of medicine. He then graduated from Wichita State University, Wichita, KS in 1986 with his medical degree as a Physician Assistant.
Starting his practice in 1986 in Arlington, OR he immediately learned the value of family medicine and getting to know your patients of all ages and multi generations within a family. “I am currently caring for the fourth generation of a family I met first in 1986. I strongly believe in allowing each patient to be a part of their own health decisions and I love to work with them in making those decisions. I want patients to know and feel they are truly cared about when they leave my office."
Bob loves the outdoors in all ways. He loves music, especially music theater. He has played the trumpet in music theater in The Dalles for over 20 years having played in many of the familiar broadway musicals. "I felt God brought me to the gorge for many reasons 30 years ago and have enjoyed it ever since." He has a long time partner, Dianne, and 3 children, ages 32, 29 and 10.
James W. Pennington, MD
Dr. Pennington has been practicing family medicine since completing his residency in Georgia in 1983. After nine years of medicine in west Texas, he moved with his family to Hood River in 1992. He believes in the philosophy of family medicine treating the whole person from birth to end of life. He thinks that physical needs are tied to the emotional and spiritual. He enjoys partnering with patients so they can attain their health goals. He and his wife Leslie will celebrate their fortieth anniversary in December. They have three adult children and two grandchildren. His wife and him enjoy being around his grandkids often. Dr. Pennington is currently taking a course at OHSU on medicine in developing countries and hopes to do mission trips in the future. He enjoys cycling, hiking, backpacking and climbing.
Laura A. Starrett, MD
Laura is a self-proclaimed tomboy and “Air Force brat”, having grown up all over the Rocky Mountain west. She graduated from University of Colorado Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. She completed Family Medicine residency training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL, while living in a Mexican community, where she learned Spanish and how to make a killer posole stew. After working at a church-based health center in that neighborhood for 5 years, she relocated to Hood River and began working at La Clinica del Carino (now known as One Community Health). While raising two daughters and job sharing with her physician husband Rick, she has obtained additional training in international health. Beginning in 2007, she and Rick became partners at Summit Family Medicine.
Laura speaks Spanish. She practices Family Medicine with obstetrics, with special interest in Women’s Health and International and Travel Medicine. She is our “go-to” for helping patients prepare for safe international travel. When not working in the office, or in her garden, Laura loves mountain biking, hiking, backpacking, and exploring her relationship with God. There is nothing she loves better than connecting with friends over a glass of wine to discuss politics, good books, and the art of living a good life.
Richard P. Starrett, MD
Rick is a fourth generation Oregonian, and a graduate of the Oregon Health and Sciences University. He completed Family Medicine residency training at Stanislaus County Medical Center in Modesto, California. After marrying his life partner Laura and working 7 years in central Chicago at a church based health center, he returned with his new family to Oregon to begin practice at La Clinica del Carino. In 2007, an opportunity arose to join Summit Family Medicine, where Rick and Laura have been in practice since.
Rick speaks Spanish. He practices office-based Family Medicine, with an emphasis on preventative care and acute medical problems. Outside the office, Rick enjoys the opportunity to grow vegetables and fruit in our beautiful climate. You also may find him hiking or biking on local roads or trails, but probably won’t find him when he is hunting mushrooms. His wife and daughters bring great joy to him.
